Throughout my time at IMG Physical Therapy, I was able to learn and grow as a student and also as a clinician. This was my second clinical rotation, and I knew that there was a strong emphasis on manual therapy and hands-on treatment with patients. I was able to complete all of my didactic work before going onto this rotation, so I had a good foundation going into this. However, I felt a little rusty on my manual skills as this was at the beginning of my program, and I didn’t do a lot of hands-on treatment during my first rotation. Chris and Eric made sure that each student was competent in their hands-on treatment before allowing us to work on patients. They spent time going over each body part with the specific treatment and ensured that we fully understood what we were doing. This gave me a little refresher as to what I learned one to two years ago in school, and it boosted my confidence with my clinical and hands-on skills.

From day one, I felt extremely comfortable at this clinic and was able to open up much quicker here than at my first rotation. The aides, front desk staff, PTs, PTAs, and other students were extremely welcoming and friendly, and they made it easy to work together in the clinic and make sure everything is running smoothly. I was intimidated by the thought of being with other students here as I was the only student during my first rotation, but it was really refreshing to have people that were going through the same thing as me working alongside me. We were able to bounce ideas off each other and give each other advice in regards to patient-centered care, studying with school, and exercise ideas.

The thing I struggled with most going into this clinical was discussing diagnoses and plan of care with patients. I wasn’t confident in my own skills and knowledge and second-guessed what I was saying. Eric was extremely helpful and provided me guidance on how to be more efficient and confident with these particular conversations. By the end of this rotation, I felt that I gained a lot more confidence when discussing these things with patients and giving them education on their condition and exercises that they were performing each session. With more exposure to evaluations and different patient cases, I was able to get more comfortable with patient education and made it more efficient and natural, rather than choppy and unsure.

Overall, this clinical experience has helped me grow in my clinical skills, and I feel confident going into my third and final clinical in a little over a week. I will continue to utilize the things I learned at IMG with Eric and Chris into my next clinical and my future practice as a licensed PT. My last 12 weeks here have flown by, and it’s hard to believe that is over. I would recommend IMG Physical Therapy to any student that wants to enhance their clinical and manual therapy skills!
