Ever feel like the world is spinning around you? This unnerving sensation, known as vertigo, can make everyday activities difficult or even dangerous. Fortunately, effective vertigo treatment is available through physical therapy, which can significantly improve your quality of life.
Vertigo is not a condition itself but a symptom of underlying issues, often related to problems in the inner ear. People experiencing vertigo usually describe it as feeling like they are spinning or that the room is moving around them.
At IMG Physical Therapy, we help patients find lasting vertigo relief through personalized care. One of these patients was Lisa (not her real name), who struggled with persistent vertigo symptoms and finally found relief with the help of our physical therapists.
How Physical Therapy Changed Lisa’s Life
Lisa, a 48-year-old graphic designer, had been struggling with severe vertigo episodes for over a year. She was eventually diagnosed with Meniere’s disease, a condition that affects the inner ear and often causes unpredictable attacks of dizziness, hearing loss, and ringing in the ears.
Before seeking treatment at IMG Physical Therapy, Lisa’s vertigo was having a dramatic impact on her daily life:
- Forcing her to take an extended sick leave from work
- Making it unsafe for her to drive
- Keeping her from enjoying time with friends and family
- Causing constant fear of sudden dizzy spells
Frustrated and overwhelmed, Lisa turned to us for help.
Lisa’s Personalized Treatment Plan
The first step was a detailed evaluation to help our team understand Lisa’s symptoms and triggers. From there, we created a customized plan that included the following:
Core Strengthening
- We guided Lisa through targeted core strengthening exercises, which would help her maintain her balance and stay steady throughout her day.
Balance Training
- Balance training on stable and unstable surfaces, sometimes with eyes closed, helped strengthen Lisa’s balance system and prevent falls. We also guided her through walking exercises to improve coordination and confidence with movement.
Education and Lifestyle Guidance
- We provided tips to help Lisa manage her symptoms at home and recognize warning signs of an imminent vertigo attack.
Lisa attended physical therapy sessions twice a week, and her program progressed in stages, with us adjusting her exercises over time to match her progress and challenges.
How Vertigo Treatment Improved Lisa’s Quality of Life
After eight weeks of consistent physical therapy, Lisa’s vertigo attacks became less frequent and less intense. As a result, her quality of life saw dramatic improvements:
- She regained her ability to drive confidently.
- She took significantly less time off work.
- She felt safer walking outside and shopping independently.
- Her anxiety about sudden attacks significantly decreased.
In short, Lisa felt like herself again. She could participate fully in her work, hobbies, and social life without fear. The right vertigo treatment not only helped her manage her symptoms but also restored her independence and peace of mind.
