When David (not his real name) arrived at IMG Physical Therapy following knee surgery, he felt discouraged. Despite a technically successful procedure, he was stuck in a frustrating loop of stiffness, swelling, and pain. He was unable to move comfortably, let alone return to the active lifestyle he missed. Like many people recovering from orthopedic surgery, David quickly learned that surgery was only the first step and that recovery required more than just rest. That’s when he was introduced to manual therapy for post-op recovery, and everything started to shift.
This is how personalized, hands-on treatment helped David regain control, confidence, and mobility.
What Held David Back: Common Challenges After Knee Surgery
David had undergone a partial knee replacement due to long-term joint degeneration. Although his surgical outcome was considered a success, recovery was tougher than expected. His knee felt stiff and resistant. Even basic tasks like standing from a chair or walking a few steps left him drained.
He reported:
- Ongoing swelling around the joint
- Sharp pain when bending or straightening the knee
- Limited mobility, especially with weight-bearing activities
- Hesitation and fear of reinjury
- Weakness in the surrounding muscles
He followed post-op instructions and completed at-home exercises, but his progress plateaued. That’s when his care team recommended manual therapy for post-op recovery to help resolve the joint and tissue restrictions holding him back.
Hands-On Help: How Manual Therapy Moved David Forward
At IMG Physical Therapy, David began a tailored physical therapy plan that included one essential element: consistent manual therapy. This hands-on care focused on the specific barriers to his healing, including joint stiffness, muscle tightness, and tissue adhesions.
Here’s how his treatment worked:
1. Joint Mobilizations: Easing Movement Without Strain
David’s therapist used low-intensity mobilization techniques to increase mobility in the joint capsule and improve alignment. This helped reduce internal resistance and allowed him to walk, bend, and squat with less pain.
2. Soft Tissue Release: Letting Muscles Move Again
The muscles around David’s knee had tightened due to limited use. Manual therapy techniques, like myofascial release, helped ease that tension and restore healthy movement patterns. This work was key to making his exercises more comfortable and effective.
3. Scar Tissue Work: Addressing the Pull
As his surgical incision healed, scar tissue built up. David described a persistent “pulling” sensation. Manual therapy for post-op recovery was used to minimize adhesions, helping the tissue heal without restricting joint movement.
4. Movement Retraining: Practice That Transfers to Daily Life
As pain decreased and mobility improved, David was guided through functional tasks, like stair climbing and sit-to-stand transitions. With manual support and cueing, he learned safer, smoother movement patterns that reduced compensations and boosted his confidence.
What Changed: Visible, Measurable Improvements
After several weeks of consistent therapy, David saw and felt real progress:
- Knee pain dropped significantly
- Swelling and tightness reduced after activity
- His full range of motion returned
- Confidence replaced hesitancy
- He resumed walking and recreational activities with ease
Most importantly, David felt empowered. He wasn’t just going through the motions but actively rebuilding strength, comfort, and independence.
Why Manual Therapy Was the Missing Piece
For David, manual therapy for post-op recovery wasn’t just helpful. It was essential. Exercise alone couldn’t address the scar tissue, joint stiffness, and soft tissue restrictions that were limiting his progress. Hands-on treatment filled that gap.
Every session at IMG Physical Therapy was matched to his healing stage, ensuring progress without overloading the knee. This targeted, responsive approach helped him move forward safely and consistently.
